Punta Cana Party Laws and Safety Basics
By Punta Party Editorial Team · Published August 8, 2026 · Updated August 8, 2026

The short answer
The legal drinking age in the Dominican Republic is 18. Drug possession is a serious criminal offence with severe penalties and no tourist leniency. Most party problems visitors encounter come from unlicensed transport, unregistered guests in gated communities, and noise curfew breaches — all avoidable.
The legal basics
- Drinking age: 18. ID is checked at clubs and some beach bars.
- Drugs: possession and supply are criminal offences with severe penalties. There is no tolerance policy for tourists.
- Sex work: prostitution itself is not criminalised for adults in the Dominican Republic, but organising, procuring or profiting from it is illegal, and anything involving minors is prosecuted extremely severely. Punta Party does not arrange, broker or facilitate any adult services.
- Public alcohol: allowed in many areas, but local ordinances and resort rules vary.
Party hosts and entertainment staff — what is legitimate
Professional event hosts, MCs, dancers, bartenders and performers are a normal part of the events industry here, and they work under contract as staff for a defined shift and role. Legitimate suppliers provide named staff, written scope, and standard event contracts.
If a supplier is vague about what staff are actually contracted to do, that is a warning sign. Book entertainment through licensed event companies with contracts, not through informal contacts.
Practical safety for group trips
- Use pre-booked private transport, especially after midnight.
- Keep drinks in sight and use hotel or villa safes for passports.
- Register visitors at the gate in gated communities — unregistered guests are turned away.
- Respect the outdoor music curfew; it is the most common cause of a party being stopped.
- Emergency number in the Dominican Republic is 911.
